EU business hubs await surge in UAE corporate travellers

European pavilion to grow by 66% at GIBTM as Schengen waiver prompts inevitable growth in business travel between UAE and 25 EU countries

Business destinations in the EU are now on the cusp of an influx of business travellers from the UAE, after the European Parliament voted for Emiratis to be exempt from obtaining visas to visit any of the 25 Schengen countries last week.

“A further announcement will be made regarding the execution of the decision, but effectively this means Emiratis will be able to travel freely to 25 countries in the EU for periods of up to 90 days without a visa, said Lois Hall, Exhibition Manager of the Gulf Incentives, Business Travel and Meetings Expo, (GIBTM) which takes place at The Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) on 24-26 March 2014.

After a similar decision by the UK to relax visa requirements for UAE nationals (online visa applications 48 hours in advance), the stage is set for a whole new chapter of business travel from the region, certainly if the scheme is extended to other Gulf nations.

Ready to benefit from the new ruling at this year’s GIBTM, is the European pavilion, which contains 19 companies and destinations, and is 66% larger than last year. Debutants include companies such as Spain’s Iberostar, Barcelo Hotels and Resorts, I’way Express from the Czech Republic, Talaria Experience from Madrid, as well as Arsenal Football Club.

France alone receives over 22,000 visitors from the UAE, each year, and according to an exclusive Ernst & Young report, which is to be revealed at GIBTM, Paris is the most preferred destination for Middle Eastern business travellers. London comes in at number two and Frankfurt at number five. The report also forecasts acceleration in business travel, both inbound, and outbound from the Middle East region.

“Over 66% of the world’s population lies within an eight hour flight of UAE, giving the region unparalleled leverage to become the future global hub for business travellers. Indeed Middle Eastern carriers already share 7% of the global market which the Airbus Global Market Forecast 2013 estimates will grow to 11% by 2031, an annual growth rate of 7.3%, higher by 2% than any other geographical region in the world,” added Hall.

But it’s not just the UK and the EU looking for a greater share of the regional MICE market. The Asia pavilion at the show this year includes Thailand and Korea who are also looking at attracting the lucrative Middle East outbound business.

These trends and much more will be presented at the GIBTM seminar sessions which will include Business Travel in the Middle East and ‘The habits of Middle Eastern business travellers’, based on research conducted by, international professional services firm, Ernst and Young. In addition, the highly anticipated ‘Launch of the Middle East MICE Buyers Report’ where Rob Davidson of the University of Greenwich in London will present the results of the Middle Eastern Meeting Planners’ Site Selection Survey – brand new research which demonstrates the factors that are most important to Middle Eastern meeting planners when they are deciding where to locate their events.

The two seminar sessions will look at the current MICE trends throughout the region and offer invaluable trending insights and business forecasts.

This year’s GIBTM will accommodate 300 exhibitors from 35 countries including up to 300 influential Hosted Buyers that will attend the event, with 8,500 pre-scheduled appointments. Representatives from major companies including Kuoni Events, TE Connectivity, UHY International, Medicongress, Mary Kay, HelmsBriscoe, FEI Company, China International Medicine Exchange Association International Service Center, Contendam and Portigon Financial Services have all been accepted onto the highly sought after programme.

IMEX in Frankfurt takes trade show value to new heights with personalised support services, guided tours and new hosted buyer groups

A number of innovative new support services and education offerings, plus a rise in new hosted buyer groups and exhibitors will be some of the hallmarks of the IMEX in Frankfurt trade show, opening May 20th at Messe Frankfurt.

A new pre-show concierge service to help first-time hosted buyers get the most from their attendance at the show is being launched this month (March). It is one of several new ideas being introduced by the IMEX Group to increase business and networking value for buyers attending the trade show. Each new buyer will receive a telephone call from the IMEX concierge team giving them the opportunity to ask questions relating to travel, appointments with exhibitors, the education programme or other subjects.

Beyond the trade show format
In addition to a brand new IMEX App, delivered by QuickMobile; refinements to the IMEX portals and website plus live, preshow ‘how to’ webinars, IMEX now offers a wide choice of personalised support services for exhibitors, intermediaries, trade visitors and hosted buyers. These high quality, high-touch services build upon the core trade show format (which combines business, education and networking) with new opportunities to both increase and demonstrate return on investment.

New hosted buyer groups
20 new hosted buyer groups are confirmed to date and include groups from Travel Alberta, Hong Tourism Board and Energy Cities Alliance.

Among the 3500 exhibiting companies attending will be some exciting new exhibitors and destinations including Azerbaijan, Georgia, Hong Kong, Royal Caribbean Cruises and Peru. Hotel groups are once again a growth area at IMEX with Club Med, Dorchester Collection, Falkensteiner Hotels, Great Hotels of the World, Le Hotels and Parc Hotels all attending as new exhibitors.

Several new educational and exhibitor hubs are being introduced on the show floor, allowing for allied or complementary exhibitors to be found in one place. Technology exhibitors will be located on a new Technology Pavilion; a new Meeting Design Hub will house specialised exhibitors and deliver education on all aspects of meeting design and a new Tech Hub will be introduced, following a successful trial at IMEX America in October. The Tech Hub will provide a quick and easy update on new technologies plus hands-on education sessions for a maximum of 30 people. The Sustainability Hub is modelled the same way for maximum convenience and ease of location, mixing ‘meet the expert’ opportunities with information and education sessions on one purpose-built stand.

New themed tours
Having trialled show tours in 2013, IMEX will now be offering German visitors a range of guided tours for 2014. The new IMEX tours allow German visitors to take part in an education session on a theme inspired by GCB Megatrends research. Following the session participants will be led on a guided tour of various stands on the same theme. The tours are designed to increase visitor knowledge and expand potential new business contacts.

Education remains strong pull
This year the IMEX-CIC Inspiration Centre – the main education theatre on the show floor – will provide a single site for all English and German language education, with the exception of daily GCB German keynotes which will take place each morning in Hall 9. The Inspiration Centre will also house a new Creativity Zone, Hot Topic Tables with moderated peer-to-peer conversations, plus a new Meet the Expert Clinic. As in previous years, the Centre will also be home to all IMEX 30-minute campfires, 45-minute seminars and the Research Pod.

All German language education, including the primary GCB-Seminartage programme, plus all English language sessions will be organised into six tracks for 2014: Trends and Research; Sustainability; Technology and Social Media; Risk Management and Compliance; Marketing and Communication and General Education. A new track – Business Skills – has been introduced to meet demand for education about the fundamentals of good business practice regardless of industry type.

As last year, Veranstaltungsplaner – the largest national association of corporate meeting planners in Germany – will also have a dedicated education and research clinic on the show floor.

New vision growth
IMEX’s hallmark Vision Initiatives continue to grow and add further value for all audiences attending. The programme for the preshow Association Day – with education designed to address association management challenges – is now live online. The event continues to provide professional education along three dedicated tracks, with an afternoon of concurrent sessions followed by new hot topic, facilitated group discussions and rounding off with an evening networking reception.

Final details for Exclusively Corporate @IMEX (also on Monday May 19), which provides an afternoon of private education and networking for corporate meeting planners and senior executives, are also being put into place. IMEX will announce full programme details, together with a well-known UK business entrepreneur as keynote, shortly. The event’s theme will be “Innovation and Creativity in an Era of Regulation and Compliance – the Challenge for Corporate Meeting Planners.”

Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and David Scowsill, President & Chief Executive Officer of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) are both confirmed speakers for this important annual advocacy event.

In 2015 Mongolia will be the Official Partner Country of ITB Berlin – on 5 March at this year’s ITB Berlin the signing will take place of the Partner Country agreement between Mongolia and the world’s leading travel trade show

Berlin, 5 March 2014 – In 2015 the focus will be on Mongolia, the Partner Country of ITB Berlin. On Wednesday, 5 March 2014 at ITB Berlin, Mr. Altangerel Purev, State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Mongolia, and Dr. Christian Göke, Chief Executive Officer of Messe Berlin GmbH, will officially sign an agreement between the world’s largest travel trade show and Mongolia, the Partner Country of the event.

“In its role as the Partner Country of ITB Berlin 2015 Mongolia will be sending out a clear signal as an emergent tourism destination. ’Everything except ordinary’ is how one could briefly describe this central Asian travel destination, which to date remains relatively unknown. The fascinating culture of Mongolia’s nomads, its almost endlessly undulating green steppes, its mystic traditions harking back to the legendary Genghis Khan and many other outstanding facets of Mongolia already await visitors to Hall 26 at this year’s ITB Berlin.

Acht Donauländer präsentieren gemeinsam mit dem Donaukompetenzzentrum (DCC) die Tourismusangebote und neuesten Entwicklungen an Europas zweitlängstem Fluss

Berlin, 3. März 2014 – „Entdecke die Donau auf der ITB Berlin.“ Acht Donauländer – Deutschland, Österreich, die Slowakei, Ungarn, Serbien, Rumänien, Bulgarien und Moldau – laden die Besucher der weltgrößten Reisemesse ein, die Schönheit, Geschichte, Kultur- und Sehenswürdigkeiten der Donau zu entdecken. Bei einer Vielzahl von Events und Aktivitäten haben Interessierte Gelegenheit, die verschiedenen Reiseziele entlang der Donau kennenzulernen sowie einen Überblick über die Geschäfts- und Tourismuspotenziale der Donau in acht verschiedenen Ländern zu bekommen.

Mit 2.888 Kilometern ist die Donau der zweitlängste Fluss in Europa. Auf einer zweistündigen geführten Tour zum Thema „Gemeinsames Kulturerbe entlang der Donau“ können sich die Besucher ein Bild von den beeindruckenden Landschaften sowie der geografischen, kulturellen und historischen Vielfalt des Flusses machen. An den acht Ständen der Donauländer beantworten kompetente Berater Fragen zu den spezifischen touristischen Angeboten. Chancen durch länderübergreifende Kooperationen
Zum Thema „Vermarktung des gemeinsamen kulturellen Erbes“ und wie Kulturrouten an der Donau als Modell für grenzüberschreitenden Tourismus und Motor für sozioökonomische Entwicklung stehen findet am Freitag, 7. März auf den ITB Destination Days in Halle 7.1a ein Forum mit hochkarätigen Gästen statt. Unter anderem wird die Bedeutung des Tourismus in Bezug auf den Erhalt und die Förderung der lokalen Kultur thematisiert, wie auch gemeinsame Marketing-Strategien und Aktivitäten. Zudem zeigt das Forum auf, inwieweit kulturorientierte Themenreisen helfen können, Tourismusakteure für länderübergreifende Kooperationen zu gewinnen und sich neue Chancen für Tourismusunternehmen in den Destinationen, wie auch für internationale Reiseveranstalter zu eröffnen.

Mit dem Donau-Reisepass lernen die Besucher der ITB Berlin die Donauländer kennen und können wertvolle Preise gewinnen. Sie müssen sich nur den Besuch am Stand der Donauländer mit einem Reisestempel bestätigen lassen. Mindestens sechs Stempel sind nötig, um an der Verlosung für eine einwöchige Donaukreuzfahrt und Wochenend-Hotelaufenthalte für jeweils zwei Personen teilzunehmen.
