European Cities Marketing to launch the first Manifest on DMOs’ future

May 31, 2017

European Cities Marketing to launch the first Manifest on DMOs’ future

The report will look at the daily change and disruption occurring in European tourism; it sets out a vision on how Destination Marketing Organisations (DMOs) can empower to take on a leading role in city marketing and management.
This first ECM Manifest has been produced in partnership with TOPOSOPHY and will be launched during forthcoming ECM International Conference in Dubrovnik, May 31 – June 3, 2017.

After turbulence caused by terrorism, political shocks and major shifts in consumer travel behaviour, Marketing professionals attending this year’s European Cities Marketing (ECM) International Conference from across Europe and overseas will have one thing on their minds: disruption has become the new normal.
As most destination marketing organisations are still operated along traditional lines under the direction of local government, reacting rapidly to support tourism partners through these changes can be highly challenging.

This vision will be visible through a new paper titled The Future of DMOs: The ECM Manifest which will be presented in the opening session of the ECM International Conference, and distributed online from the start of the event.

“At last year’s Conference, TOPOSOPHY presented a landmark report for city marketers in Europe on the Sharing Economy. This year’s report focuses on the Future of DMOs. It gives a real vision of how they should re-organise their activities internally and externally, and emerge with a strengthened role in order to face the future with confidence”, said Manolis Psarros, CEO of Toposophy.

Commenting on this vision, ECM President Ignasi de Delàs added: “Throughout Europe, DMOs are facing similar demands to re-think what they do. Budget cuts, political pressure and shifts in consumer behaviour mean that it’s time for DMOs to find a new, strengthened role in attracting all types of talent, ideas and investment for their cities, regions and nations. ECM is already playing a strong role in supporting cities when disturbance is the only constant in urban travel. As practitioners, we want to share our vision with the tourism and meetings industry and this report is the perfect example of our work.”

The ECM International Conference will be held from May 31-June 3, 2017 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. It will bring together Europe’s city marketers and tourism professionals with industry thought leaders and leading tourism academics from around the globe to debate and navigate the new normal in urban travel and tourism.

For more information and to receive your copy of the Manifest, please go on ECM Website www.europeancitiesmarketing.com

African Agenda win the IAPCO Driving Excellence Innovation Award

African Agenda win the IAPCO Driving Excellence Innovation Award

Elizabeth Winter of African Agenda was the celebrated winner of the IAPCO Driving Excellence Innovation Award 2016, as announced at the impressive IMEX Gala Evening in Frankfurt. Corne Koch of Wesgro Convention Bureau was delighted to accept the award on Elizabeth’s behalf, presented by Jan Tonkin, IAPCO President.

Elizabeth’s award winning innovation was a “standing discussion“, a session, which took participants out of their comfort zones and brought them together to share ideas in a lively, structured discussion. Experiences and knowledge were shared and new ideas sparked, as all corners of the session topic were explored. The bonus connection of improved cognition and physical movement to strengthen learning, improve memory retrieval, and enhance motivation and morale was not missed by the participants who scored the sessions highly when surveyed post conference.

Elizabeth stated ‘Being innovative does not necessarily imply being an inventor, we suggest it implies assessing a situation, a need, an audience and crafting a concept in order to shape a solution. This is an example of that.’

The IAPCO Innovation Award, which is supported by IMEX, is in its third year and attracted excellent quality and varied submissions. Three finalists each created a video describing their innovation, presented to the audience of the IAPCO Annual Meeting in Dubai for the final vote. The results were very close and both runners-up deserve recognition for their innovative concepts: Susan Kilcoyn, Conference Partners International for Connect16; and Ziv Izackov, Kenes Group, for a technological innovation for ESPID 2016.

Sheep View 360˚ campaign wins at the World Media Awards 2017
Sheep View 360˚, which saw the Faroe Islands enlist the help of its many (80,000) sheep to put the islands on the Google Street View map, recently won the top Travel & Tourism Award at the World Media Awards 2017.

With a budget of only $200,000, Sheep View 360˚ generated two billion media impressions and an estimated PR value of around $50 million. The campaign, in turn, shared the natural beauty of the little-known islands with the world, garnering support from countless destinations worldwide.

The campaign saw Faroese resident Durita Dahl Andreassen combine forces with Visit Faroe Islands to undertake a unique sheep-based mapping system to petition Google to put the destination on Street View, thus unlocking the Faroes’ hidden beauty. By mounting cameras on the back of sheep, which periodically captured 360˚ images as they wandered the hillsides freely, Durita was able to upload the pictures to Google maps, thus creating the unique ‘Sheep View’.

Nominated alongside Airbnb, Destination Canada, London & Partners and Marriott International, Visit Faroe Islands is thrilled to scoop the top award in the Travel & Tourism category.

The campaign has also won several other prestigious international awards in the USA, France, Sweden and Denmark.

Austrian Airlines bietet ab sofort giropay und eps an

May 30, 2017

China Hotel Marketing Conference

May 26, 2017

China Hotel Marketing Conference:
How to Make the Most of a Hotel Strategic Alliance in China?

Senior executives from HUAZHU Hotels Group, Hilton China, Dossen International Group, and Vienna Hotels Group are scheduled to take part in the upcoming TravelDaily China’s China Hotel Marketing Conference, slated for next month in Shanghai.

The number of strategic alliances featuring hotel companies from China and their counterparts from foreign markets has risen over the past few years.
This collaborative route on the part of foreign brands is proving to be a preferential tactic for capitalizing on opportunities emanating from China, including the lucrative outbound travel pie. There is plenty to gain for local hotel organizations, too, from such alliances.

On one hand, hotel operators from China are looking at supporting their plans of multi-brand strategy and fast expansion by counting on a foreign hotel company’s expertise in maintaining operational standard for various star-ratings, and also areas such as loyalty programs. Chinese companies believe these partnerships would propel them to aptly deal with increasing demand for managerial, operational, technological and other resources as they scale up their operations. Limited operating experience in specific areas can certainly be overcome via such alliances as foreign entities have dealt with such issues over the years.

On the other, foreign brands, in addition to making China an integral part of their business plans and optimizing their investment strategy, are also benefitting from Chinese operators’ local expertise. They acknowledge the need to minutely scrutinize the preferences of travellers from China and accordingly have been running tailor-made service program to ensure that the highest guest service is delivered to Chinese guests via apt staff training, the amenities Chinese people prefer for their stay etc.

So going forward, what to expect from such alliances? How can the international brands better satisfy the localized and personalized needs of the Chinese consumers while maintaining their own respective brand propositions?

The upcoming China Hotel Marketing Conference (HMC), scheduled to take place in Shanghai (7-8 June, 2017), is going to feature senior executives from domestic and foreign hotel groups. The panellists:
● Elton Sun, Corporate Executive Vice President, HUAZHU Hotels Group
● Gloria Wang, President, Hampton by Hilton China
● Allan Cheng, Chairman and CEO, Dossen International Group
● Kevin Liu, Chief Brand Marketing Officer, Vienna Hotels Group

REGISTER TODAY
The 2017 China Hotel Marketing Conference is conducted in both English and Chinese. Simultaneous interpretation is available.

BESTCITIES UNVEIL AMBITIOUS PLANS FOR 2017 TOKYO GLOBAL FORUM

May 23, 2017

BESTCITIES UNVEIL AMBITIOUS PLANS FOR 2017 TOKYO GLOBAL FORUM

BestCities Global Alliance is set to champion inclusivity and multi-culturalism within the business tourism industry in 2017 and beyond, following the announcement Building Global Connections Across Cultures will be the core theme underlying this year’s BestCities Global Forum, taking place in Tokyo 4-7 December 2017.

Building on the 100% delegate success ratings in Dubai 2016, the second BestCities Global Forum will be hosted in partnership with the Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau (TCVB). The impressive programme of education, insight and networking, is already shaping up to be this year’s must-attend event for senior international association meeting planners, looking to increase the positive impact of their meetings.

The Global Forum offers an intimate, yet stimulating learning environment for international association event organisers, to gain a deeper understanding, not only of ways to collaborate more effectively, but how to build professional relationships across cultures and develop effective leadership skills in a global context.

With over 25 years of experience, Sean Blair, owner of ProMeet will facilitate the diverse Forum programme, which includes thought-provoking education sessions, engaging practical workshops, relevant case studies and interactive breakouts challenges, designed to unlock the collective knowledge within the room. Influential speakers will include “accidental executive” and former CEO of Tourism Vancouver Rick Antonson and global leadership and cultural intelligence expert, Miriam van der Horst, owner of Learning 360.

While the majority of the sessions take place in the luxurious Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo, nestled within a vast 19th Century Japanese Garden, host TCVB is also planning a rich and diverse programme to immerse participants in Japan’s heritage and culture, while revealing powerful insights into the city and its institutions. With preparations quickly progressing towards 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, Prof. Hiroo Ichikawa Executive Director of The Mori Memorial Foundation, will also be discussing the strengths and opportunities of Tokyo in the next decade.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to establish relationships with peers and grow global networks, with events such as the Ambassador Dinner, bringing delegates together with influential local ambassadors and key contacts.

A perfect example of collaboration across cultures, the Global Forum also allows delegates to gain an in-depth knowledge of 12 top class meeting destinations under one roof, with City Café meetings and social networking with all 12 of BestCities’ partners: Berlin, Bogotá, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dubai, Edinburgh, Houston, Madrid, Melbourne, Singapore, Tokyo and Vancouver.

BestCities Board Chair, Jonas Wilstrup from Wonderful Copenhagen said:
“Building global connections across cultures is at the very heart of BestCities ethos and long-term success. We are 12 partners that recognise the collective strength of working together, adding value not only for our individual cities, but our clients too. This year’s Global Forum will be addressing both the challenges and opportunities when dealing with international stakeholders, providing informed practical advice and peer-to-peer learning in a way, that will genuinely help and support senior association executives to take their future meetings to the next level.”

Kazuko Toda, Director from Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau said:
“Tokyo is delighted to host the BestCities Global Forum in Tokyo this December. Through hosting the Forum, we would like our clients to find out what Tokyo has to offer as a meetings destination, and not only a tourism destination. Also, through the learnings of the Forum, we hope to motivate and give confidence to clients who have not had the opportunity to hold their event in Tokyo or any of the new BestCities destinations to consider us for their next meeting. “

The inaugural BestCities Global Forum in Dubai, December 2016, was celebrated as an overwhelming success, with 100% of delegates surveyed reporting the Forum fulfilled their main objectives for attending and would recommend it to their international association meeting planners.

Speaking about the outcomes of the 2016 Global Forum in Dubai, Andry Vleeming, Chairman of World Congress on Low Back and Pelvic Girdle Pain said:

“I came with an open mind and was rewarded with four days of networking with talented colleagues sharing interests and expertise.  It has helped change the way I think about our future conferences – the need to move into the future more quickly, which is more critical today than it was in the past.”

Registration for the BestCities Global Forum Tokyo is now open. Free to attend, with round-trip flights, accommodation and meals for all attending qualified international association executives covered by BestCities.

Fusion of Old & New Taipei

May 23, 2017

Fusion of Old & New – Smart City Cultural-Creative New Concepts Asia’s Premier MICE City – Taipei

Germany’s MICE industry is among the world’s most advanced. To promote the first-rate MICE environment and tourism resources that Taipei has to offer, the Department of Information and Tourism (DOIT) of the Taipei City Government once again attended Germany’s IMEX this year, utilizing its Taipei Makes Perfection promotional theme, seeking to establish itself more firmly and capture interest in European MICE and tourism industry territory.

Within Asia’s meeting and exhibition sector, Taipei City’s brand has now entered the mature period. Stellar achievements are enjoyed in both the international meeting and international exhibition segments. According to DOIT, in 2016 there was a total of 112 applications for sponsorship for the staging of international meetings, exhibitions, and incentive travel in the city, and in total approximately NT$9.7 million in sponsorship assistance was distributed. These various meeting/exhibition/incentive travel cases brought in almost 100,000 business and tourist visitors, creating approximately NT$3.2 billion in tourism value for Taipei City.

According to DOIT Senior Specialist Chuen-Huey Jiang, in regard to sponsorship for foreign nationals coming to Taipei to participate in international meetings, exhibitions, and incentive travel, this year a new sponsorship item has been specially added to the program – tickets for 4-hour tours on the city’s new double-decker sightseeing bus service. The comfortable open-top sightseeing buses take in all the city’s key attractions, enabling businesspeople from overseas easy touring of the city when they have free time away from their work tasks. Taipei has become one of Asia’s smart cities, with its meeting and exhibition sector becoming an e-intelligent industry. DOIT specially targets international personnel visiting Taipei for MICE events, providing them with Taipei Free Public WiFi Access network service. This free Internet-access service is available 24h, with no restrictions in terms of time or usage number, ensuring seamless global connection for travelers while visiting the city.

Asia’s MICE cities emphasize integration of their advantages and special characteristics, creating comprehensive tourism, meeting, and exhibition effectiveness. Taipei City possesses international-caliber professional exhibition and meeting/conference venues, and in recent years has integrated novel cultural-creative concepts to develop a splendid diversity of innovative facility options. Examples including Dadaocheng, an old-city district, Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, home to the Baroque Garden, Huashan 1914 Creative Park, a renovated heritage winery complex, and The Red House, a red-brick public-market complex over a century old. These cultural-creative venues use the unique ambience of heritage architecture and distinctive cultural elements, conveying the culture of the past in creating the innovation of the future. In turn, they are integrated with Taipei City’s unique tourism resources, providing visiting international professionals with a deeper and more wide-ranging experience, and helping to make Taipei the brightest “star of tomorrow” in the Asia MICE galaxy.
The 2017 Universiade, or World University Games, will be bursting onto the world stage in Taipei this August. A total of approximately 12,000 athletes and other international friends from 150 countries and territories are expected in Taipei for the grand competition. Taipei, as proud host, has specially designed tours that, in addition to the competition venues themselves, introduce the city’s scenic attractions and much more – for example, one tour introducing the local tea culture, another its classic landmarks, another the distinctive neighborhoods of its lane/alley grids, another its Chinese opera culture … and on and on. The 25 wonderful tours on offer for the city’s special guests encompass everything from the city’s scenic highlights and superb food to its unique culture and the vivid stories of its people, giving friends from around the globe the most in-depth Taipei experience.

For IMEX, fun and interesting “Bravo, Taipei!” interactive games were set up at the Taipei Pavilion. Each of the paper-based cultural-creative games had the Universiade as theme. Visitors could play one of three choices: a baseball “Nine-Palace Grid,” a basketball-hoop shooter game, or a ring toss. These presented participants with a mini-experience of Taipei’s dynamic sports culture, and visitors gave a large thumbs-up praising the attractiveness of Taipei’s cultural-creative merchandise. A lively and bustling atmosphere was created, with the enthusiasm of the participants drawing much attention to the Taipei stand.

“Taipei Makes Perfection, Greeting You with Great Venues & Gourmet Food.” Taipei’s comprehensive array of visitor-friendly perfections, from its superb cuisine to scenic delights, awaits you with open arms. The city’s hope is that every international professional who visits will be able to fully experience the city’s fusion of old and new, high-tech intelligence, gastronomic diversity, culture, and technology, coexisting in harmony to create the unique charms of this great Asian city – Taipei.
