The DMC Network Celebrates Third Annual Exchange in Indianapolis, Indiana

The Third Annual DMC Network Exchange took place August 23 – 26, 2017 with 110 clients and DMC Network partners coming together in the wonderful city of Indianapolis, Indiana. Accent Indy, the DMC Network partner for the destination, created and hosted the group in their hometown state.

Previously held in Los Cabos and Lake Tahoe, the three-day educational and networking event included unique experiences at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where guests were invited to ride around the track with professional drivers and kick a field goal at Lucas Oil Stadium. Attendees also got to experience ‘Indy like a local’ through a variety of planned afternoon activities that included a bike tour and Segway tour through Indy’s cultural trail, visiting top local Breweries and golfing in the sunshine, to name just a few. In addition, the DMC Network partnered with Teachers Treasures to create a give-back experience for the attendees that provided much needed school supplies and backpacks to the community of Indianapolis.

Educational sessions on the US Economy with Economist Chris Kuehl and a panel discussion with Michael Dominguez (Chief Sales Officer of MGM Resorts International), Leonard Hoops, (President and CEO of Visit Indy), Kevin Hinton, (Chief Executive Officer for SITE) and Darrell Tamosuinas, (President of Teneo Hospitality Group) on crisis management, current trends and destination marketing ensured both DMC Network partners and their clients were given plenty of food for thought.

The city of Indianapolis truly shone during the program with exceptional dining experiences at St. Elmos and Char Blue as well as signature themed evening events including Indypalooza and a Classic 80’s dinner with guest appearances by “Prince” and “Michael Jackson”!

The DMC Network’s tagline, ‘’We’re there for you!” came into special relief at the event as an expression of each partner’s commitment to their clients but also to their destination. “DMC Network members share a deeply held conviction that our brand promise has to be more than mere lip service. It must be lived out in how we treat our people, our teams, our clients, and particularly, our destination. This clearly means giving back to the communities we depend upon for the work we do” said Dan Tavrytzky, Managing Director of the DMC Network.

Accent Indy President, Shannon Gardiner, DMCP added “In the case of Indianapolis, we invited all of our guests to participate in a healthful “Rise & Shine” program each morning that included walking tours of the city, canal by sunrise and gentle flow Yoga. During the program, several local non-profit associations were invited to meet with the DMC Network team and Industry press in an effort to give profile to the amazing work that is being done locally to make Indianapolis the warm and welcoming city that it is today. Teacher’s Treasures, Dress for Success, Back on My Feet Indianapolis, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and PUP (People for Urban Progress) were all a part of this year’s program.” At the end of an action packed, thought provoking and truly “purposeful” 3 days, Matt Cuevas, incoming Chair for the DMC Network in 2018 officially announced the destination for the Fourth Annual DMC Network Client Exchange: Panama, June 28th – July 1st 2018.

The accommodation battle (sharing vs. traditional) is on in China.

August 25, 2017

The accommodation battle (sharing vs. traditional) is on in China.

HUAZHU Hotels Group CEO Jenny Zhang, Tujia CEO Justin Luo, Xiaozhu CEO Kelvin Chen and IHG’s VP, Digital & Voice, Greater China, Billy Turchin, will speak at the upcoming 2017 TravelDaily Conference, (September 13-14 in Shanghai).

The fight for “stay” (sharing economy vs. traditional hotel accommodation) isn’t new, and it is far from over.
It’s not about Airbnb and other leaders trying to grab more of the accommodations market, as the local players have been making steady progress. In fact, if we talk of China and the sharing economy, where does Airbnb stand vis-à-vis Tujia, Mayi and Xiaozhu?
Even Chinese-indigenous brands, both sharing economy and hotels, are involved in an interesting tussle.
Overall, the outcome of the initiatives is clear – offer a tailored experience as per the traveler’s budget, interests/preferences etc. This is being reflected in emerging brands and listings.
China Lodging Group (HUAZHU), a hotel operator and franchisor in China with more than 10 brand names in its portfolio and over 3,330 hotels (335,000 rooms) in operation in 369 cities, is planning an upgrade for economy hotels and fast expansion of mid-scale hotels this year, with cash balance supporting capital investments and acquisitions. The plan is to maintain gross opening of 450-500 hotels with at least 40% in mid- and upscale segments. China Lodging has launched three new midscale hotel offerings: CitiGo (affordable luxury brand), Manxin and HanTing Plus (entry-level midscale brand from flagship HanTing). The company has acquired boutique hotel operator Crystal Orange, with more than 100 properties, for RMB3.65 billion.
At the same time, foreign brands, are diligently looking at ways to be a part of the digital ecosystem and strengthen their offerings in China.
The progress of Tujia is also being followed closely. After the company concluded a strategic agreement with Ctrip and Qunar to acquire their homestay businesses, Tujia has been in the news for its new platform, VaShare. As of July 2017, the VaShare platform has exchangeable properties in 800 holiday destinations around the world, and it plans to increase the number to 6,000 in two years.
So will OTAs’ foray into offline business be a game changer for the sector? What kind of transformation will this online-offline integration bring about?
Will hotel chains find themselves besieged by new competition? How is the sharing economy lending a new dimension to the sector in China?

Hear from four senior executives at the upcoming 2017 TravelDaily Conference, held in partnership with Phocuswright September 13-14 in Shanghai
● Jenny Zhang, CEO, HUAZHU Hotels Group
● Justin Luo, Co-Founder and CEO, Tujia
● Kelvin Chen, Co-founder & CEO, Xiaozhu
● Billy Turchin, Vice President, Digital & Voice, Greater China, IHG
These are not-to-be missed sessions considering the level of competition and expansion being witnessed in China at this juncture.
The two-day TravelDaily Conference is a must-attend annual event for anyone associated with the travel industry in China.

ECM Summer School

August 23, 2017

ECM Summer School – Schulungsseminar internationaler Experten aus der Kongressbranche findet vom 26. bis 30. August 2017 in Dresden statt

Dresden, den 22. August 2017.

NOVUM Hotel Group hoists its sails: the second niu to open in Lübeck

August 23, 2017

NOVUM Hotel Group hoists its sails: the second niu to open in Lübeck

With its innovative millennial brand, the NOVUM Hotel Group is still steering its expansion course. The niu in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck will follow the first niu hotel, located in Essen. The niu Rig is currently under development by the Hamburg Hotel Group at the strategic, prime location “Am Bahnhof 17-19”. According to current planning, the 83-room hotel will open in April 2018.

All niu hotels are highly individualized, each with its own charm. From the name to the interior, food and drink, the niu Rig tells a story inspired by shorelines and seafaring adventures – very fitting for the maritime history of the location and the vigorous activity in the Hanseatic city.

The name Rig is the term for the system of ropes or chains employed to support a ship’s masts. This makes sense because Lübeck has reigned over the Hanseatic League for over 500 years and today, as a gateway to the Baltic Sea, it is becoming an increasingly popular destination among tourists. Guests enjoy trendy furniture, accessories with a turquoise-white ambience and recurring maritime motives such as pirates, anchors, ropes, sailors and sails. In contrast to all expectations, the implementation is typically niu; quite casual yet lively. Pleasant armchairs, parquet flooring, exceptional art and more invite the modern globetrotter to experience a unique and instagrammable world.

In line with the niu philosophy, everything is shared at the niu Rig. “With our niu concept, we are throwing old conventions overboard and creating an open world of experience for both locals and travelers at attractive prices,” explains David Etmenan, Chief Executive Officer & Owner of the NOVUM Hotel Group. From our Bistro to Living Lobby – everything fits seamlessly, is networked and is even a place where locals enjoy lingering. Not to forget our Nordic-fresh inspired culinary delights such as Schwarzbrot (dark rye bread), Rotspon (locally bottled red wine), mackerel, marzipan and more, and other delights such as inspiring background music and the latest technology. Guests will find ample electrical outlets, smart flat screens, USB ports and high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

More than 30 original niu hotels will be built in Europe by 2019.

Dubai Business Events Gathers Momentum After Strong H1

August 16, 2017
  • Business events secured in the first half of 2017 set to attract over 51,000 delegates from around the world with an expected economic impact of AED 375 million

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: 15 August 2017: Dubai Business Events (DBE), the city’s official convention bureau, has reported strong results for the first half of 2017, with 97 bids submitted to host business events being successfully awarded to the city. The events secured since January, including conferences, exhibitions, meetings and incentive trips, are poised to attract over 51,636 delegates from around the world, resulting in an expected economic impact of approximately AED 375 million.

Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, said: “Dubai has grown tremendously to become a leading destination for international business events. We recognise the significance of the business events industry, and acknowledge the various growth facets each event brings to the city. Not only do they accelerate our journey towards becoming a knowledge-sharing economy, but business events are also major contributors towards our goal of welcoming 20 million visitors each year by 2020.”

In the first six months, Dubai Business Events won a total of 97 pitches to host business events in the city, and is currently awaiting verdict on 97 more that have been submitted. Key wins include: Baby Care Annual Incentive (2018), World Conference on Desalination and Water Re-Use (2019), and Congress of the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (2022).

Dubai Business Events has also ramped up efforts to highlight the city’s business events offering to international audiences. DBE representatives have attended over 50 trade events in the first half of the year, interacting with over 4,500 business events buyers and planners. The bureau has also facilitated a total of 16 site inspections with 38 clients, and hosted 144 buyers from around the world as part of four in-depth Dubai study missions.

Steen Jakobsen, Director of Dubai Business Events, said: “We’ve had a stellar start to the year, and are well on our way to achieving our targets set for 2017. As we continue to work towards further strengthening Dubai’s reputation of being a premier host destination for business events, we have a steady pipeline of initiatives planned for the year ahead. We are also focusing on expanding our network and reach globally, enabling businesses, event buyers and planners to benefit from our expertise.”

Dubai Business Event’s Al Safeer Ambassador Programme has also contributed significantly to the city’s success in bidding for international events. The programme features a network of 300 prominent experts from diverse sectors, including academia, finance, and healthcare, who are based in Dubai. Since January, the programme contributed to securing a total of 11 business events for the city.

Further study missions in 2017 will come from India, China, the Americas and Southeast Asia, while DBE will also build on its participation in major trade shows with a significant presence at IMEX America in Las Vegas and IBTM World in Barcelona towards the end of the year.

Recently, Dubai was named as one of the top 10 destinations for international meetings by Union of International Associations (UIA) in its latest edition of the International Meetings Statistics Report published last month. The city previously ranked 14th in the 2015 edition, and moved up the list with a total of 180 meetings taking place in 2016.

Battle of tour operators in China – old versus new, who will triumph?

August 15, 2017

Battle of tour operators in China – old versus new, who will triumph?
Hear from Utour Group, IPP Travel Group, CYTS and Tempus Tour Group at the 2017 TravelDaily Conference, to be held in Shanghai (Sep 13-14).

Established online travel players in China continue to target new areas of expansion and this includes foray into the packaged tour segment via an offline presence.
In case of Ctrip, in conjunction with Traveling Bestone, the OTA is targeting customers based in second-tier and third-tier cities. Late last year Ctrip chose to acquire a controlling stake in Traveling Bestone, an organization with over 5,500 offline franchise stores in 23 provinces and municipalities across the country. Ctrip’s packaged-tour revenue in Q1 rose by 26% increase over the same period last year, due to an increase in volume growth of organized tours and self-guided tours.
Jane Jie Sun, Ctrip’s CEO, during the company’s Q1 earnings call in May, mentioned: “These stores are generating healthy profits.” She added, “We plan to open 1,000 more off-line franchise stores nationwide. In 2017, our packaged tour team will invest further in procurement, distribution, product development and service innovation.”
This means the existing operators need to gear up for this aggressive plan by Ctrip, even though they themselves have been buoyed by China’s growing outbound travel demand and rising tourism expenditure.
Outbound tour operator Utour Group’s operating revenue was up by 21% to RMB 10.1 billion last year.
HNA Group’s HNA-Caissa Travel Group also witnessed their operating revenue going up by 34% to RMB 6.64 billion in 2016.
Considering that Utour and Caissa are also investing in online platforms to improve their customer acquisition, an intriguing battle is shaping up in this segment.
So will OTAs’ foray into offline business be a game changer for the sector?
What kind of transformation will this online-offline integration bring about?
A session featuring top players in this segment is scheduled to take place at the upcoming 2017 TravelDaily Conference, to be held in Shanghai (Sep 13-14).

Speaker:
● Bin Feng, Chairman, Utour Group
● Ivan Huang, President, IPP Travel Group
● Hellen Luo, CEO, CYTS
● Jin Shi, President, Tempus Tour Group

Moderated by:
● Dongjie Guo, Chairman and CEO, Huayuan International Travel
The two-day TravelDaily Conference is a must-attend annual event for anyone associated with the travel industry in China.

Outrigger Mauritius Beach Resort and its Food Hailed as ‘Excellent’ by TripAdvisor
The resort and its Plantation Club Mauritian restaurant ‘wow’ guests and diners

BEL OMBRE, MAURITIUS – The Outrigger Mauritius Beach Resort and its Plantation Club restaurant have both earned TripAdvisor 2017 Certificates of Excellence.

Issuing the awards in July, TripAdvisor said the certificates were based on “consistently great reviews”.

Some Outrigger Mauritius guest reviews for stays in 2017 read: “We couldn’t have asked for more from this hotel. The staff were the friendliest I have encountered” [Imoore131, UK]; “I would love to come back and cannot praise the hotel enough” [Isobella1, UK]; “The staff were absolutely superb and particularly good with the kids. It’s a fantastic resort with enough to keep everyone occupied” [AlexH, Dubai].

During the day the Plantation Club restaurant in the Outrigger is exclusively reserved for guests staying in suites or villas. In the evening, the Club, with its French colonial atmosphere, opens to the public and serves modern Mauritian cuisine. TripAdvisor singled out the Plantation Club for its excellence based on guests’ comments.

Plantation Club diners said: “Best dinner we have ever eaten! We have travelled to over 40 countries…and have never experienced such an amazing explosion of flavours. The ingenuity of the presentation and the combinations was mind blowing to say the least” [Cindy_Marrison, UK].

We had the Saturday champagne brunch with the gin and tonic jazz band and it was wonderful. The food was exquisite and champagne lovely” [Emma C, UK].

Amazing Restaurant – Do not miss dining experience. The chef uses vegetables and herbs from his garden to enhance his food” [Susanne U, Thailand].

Surprisingly fine kitchen — dishes really achieved an outstanding level of ‘haute cuisine’ visually and taste wise” [kr1069, Netherlands].

Cyrille Carmona, the Outrigger Mauritius Beach Resort Deputy General Manager, said: “Outrigger’s hosts and chefs work hard to deliver a superlative holiday and dining experience to visitors who appreciate quality. We invite all of our guests and visitors to Mauritius to dine and judge for themselves.
