300 events professionals discuss the Event of the Future at Croke Park

Events in the future will be immersive, engaging and technologically driven. Yet face to face is going nowhere and the more sophisticated our tech, the more we’ll crave the tactical reassurance of real people, real places, real time.

These were the key messages about the Event of the Future heard by over 300 corporate, association and agency events professionals gathered at Croke Park on Thursday 20 July to explore the power of live events and how they’re evolving in the future.

Held two days before U2’s triumphant homecoming concert, attendees also enjoyed a privileged “behind-the- scenes” look at the band’s technical set and sampled the events team’s newly launched “Stadium Street Party”, an innovative take on the more traditional summer barbecue.

Debuted in New York City in February and conceptualised by, a cloud-based platform that facilitates audience engagement during live events, The Event of the Future (EOTF) introduces meetings and events professionals from associations, corporations and agencies to insights, ideas and inspirations from best-in- class global practice in meetings and events. The Croke Park Meetings & Events team along with agency-partner SoolNua expanded the original concept into a half day conference.

Speakers included Kevin Jackson, “the most influential person in the UK events industry”, PJ Kenny, General Manager at The Hoxton and Paula Reynolds, Project Manager – Jameson Brand Homes | Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard. The event was moderated by Pádraic Gilligan Managing Partner at specialist agency SoolNua while David Meade, one of Europe’s most sought after keynote speakers closed the conference with a high-octane, energetic presentation.

Outrigger prepares a Festive Season Special in Mauritius

BEL OMBRE, MAURITIUS — The Outrigger Mauritius Beach Resort has announced a special seasonal selection of dining, dancing and delectable drinks for Christmas and New Year. There’ll be a lot of sensational tastes, sega dancing, jazz, chill out music and activities for the children along the way.

The stylish beachfront property on the south coast of Mauritius offers something new, delicious and exotic each day from 21 December to 10 January, with Russian Christmas festivities on 7 January part of the special events.

Highlights from the extensive program (here) include interactive dining experiences that celebrate Christmas tastes from around the world, the seasonal best of Mauritian cuisine at the Plantation Club, seafood extravaganzas (particularly lobster), dancing, a laser show, fireworks at the right moments, and an extensive list of supervised activities for kids.

Santa will be on the beach on Christmas Day. British Christmas flavours abound on the 23rd. For over two weeks there will be delectable champagne breakfasts, hot jazz bands, hip DJs and exotic sega dancing. There’ll be mellow chill out sounds by the pool for the go-slow bits in between.

Events will be spread around the beautifully landscaped resort from the colonial style Plantation Club and the interactive kitchens of Mercado to the fun, beach side informal moments at Willie’s Rum and Crab Shack, Bar Bleu and Edgewater.

Throughout the festive period, Outrigger’s Coral Kids Club will entertain the children with fitness classes, face painting, musical games, tennis starter classes, henna tattoo sessions, limbo fiestas, movie nights at the outdoor cinema, and more.

Khiri Travel Appoints GSA for Austrian, Czech and Slovak Markets
Khiri Travel has signed a deal with Austria-based R Asien, which will represent Khiri Travel as its exclusive DMC for Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Indonesia.

The partnership takes effect from August 2015 and will connect Khiri with outbound tour operators and travel agents in central Europe who are seeking innovative and responsible itineraries in Southeast Asia.

Since its foundation in 2011, R Asien has built its reputation by sourcing original travel itineraries in 12 European and Asian countries.
Khiri Travel’s recent Travelife certification for Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam will help us connect discerning travel agents in Europe with a Southeast Asian DMC that has a responsible and audited approach,” says Martin Rokyta, General Manager and founder of R Asien.

LONDON (30 March 2015) – The Istanbul Convention and Visitors Bureau (ICVB) works hard to bring the most important conventions and meetings in the world to Istanbul as its promotional work continues to gather pace. The ICVB has brought together high profile editors and journalists from the highest circulating and most read publications around the world within the convention, event organisation and incentive sector to Istanbul; to showcase and demonstrate the city’s huge business potential in the international meeting and convention market.

14 International Media Representatives from the USA, Europe and Asia met in Istanbul for the first time, hosted by ICVB between 25 and 28 March.

Commenting on the 4-day press visit Ozgul Ozkan Yavuz, General Manager of the Istanbul Convention and Visitors Bureau, said: “We are focussing our promotional activities with the aim of Istanbul reaching the pinnacle of the international arena. The majority of the visiting press who participated on our tour were travelling to Istanbul for the first time, expressing how happy they were to be here. Istanbul is a unique and excellent location for the convention and meetings sector due to its accessibility and its dynamic and distinctive atmosphere.”

Editors and journalists from the USA, France, UK, Belgium, Germany, Slovenia and India from a total of 14 convention, event and incentive publications were hosted as part of the press tour programme between 25 and 28 March by ICVB. The representatives of the most prominent magazines in the sector mainly explored convention centres, together with various hotels, arts and cultural centres, as well enjoying the city’s wining and dining. They also explored Istanbul’s historical quarters and discovered the city’s natural beauty while meeting colleagues from the sector.

Sofitel first Green Globe hotel on Palm Jumeirah

( LOS ANGELES, California – With a score of 90%, the Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort&Spa has been awarded the prestigious Green Globe certification, following an extensive sustainability audit conducted by sustainability experts, Farnek Consultancy.

This five-star, 361 rooms and 182 serviced apartments , Polynesian island themed resort is the first to be Green Globe certified on Palm Jumeirah, and it is the first within the Accor group, which is one of the world`s leading hotel operators, with more than 3,500 hotels, 450,000 rooms and over 160,000 employees.

“We are very proud to receive Green Globe Certification, which is the result of many months of preparation and hard work by the management team and all members of staff, highlighting our true commitment towards sustainability. We will continue reducing our impact on the environment and creating a better workplace,” said Christophe Schnyder, General Manager, Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort&Spa.

Opened in July 2013, the hotel already had key energy efficient systems incorporated in its original design, clearly indicating a commitment to sustainability at very early stages. Solar panels are installed on the roof, covering 530 square meters, and providing 50% of the hotel`s hot water. Condensation from the air conditioning units is drained and recycled to irrigate the hotel`s 27,000 square meters of land. The irrigation system itself is monitored by a state-of-the-art weather control system, which allows the hotel to operate its sprinklers more efficiently. All public area taps are fitted with water aerators, saving the property 6,000 cubic meters of water. 80% of the resort`s 24 hour lighting is equipped with LED bulbs, which saved more than 290,000 kilowatt hours of energy in less than four months. Low energy lighting in guest rooms will be phased in this year.

The hotel also has a comprehensive waste separation program: paper, plastic, cardboard, and cooking oil is collected by a local waste management company for recycling. The indirect savings alone are remarkable, in just six months the hotel could save the equivalent of 759 trees, 187,446 kilowatt hours of energy, 25,505 liters of oil, more than 1.1 million liters of water and 2,678 pounds of air pollutants.

Creating awareness and implementing best practices is of paramount importance. Commenting on the hotel`s impressive staff activities, empowerment and recognition program, Sandrine Le Biavant, Divisional Director at Dubai based Farnek Consultancy said:

“All employees are passionate and creative about the property`s sustainability initiatives. Energy and water saving updates are provided on a daily basis, and the green team organizes monthly meetings, where the hotel management recognizes sustainable achievements and encourages staff members to submit their thoughts and ideas on improving the green measures implemented.”

Rohit Salunke, the hotel`s Director of Engineering, is very enthusiastic about the positive effect that the international recognition will have on the hotel`s sustainability strategy. “The certification process provided us with a perfect framework to create awareness about sustainability throughout the resort. This will support our plans for further investment in energy efficiency,” said Salunke.

As a permanent “green” reminder to guests and staff alike, the hotel has covered parts of the interior with a unique collection of 24 vertical gardens with 170 different types of plants. The “green wall” was designed by renowned French botanical expert Patrick Blanc, and covers 600 square meters.

“It seems very appropriate that a French luxury hotel brand should embrace sustainability with such a chic display,” added Schnyder.

Darwin’s multi-awarded convention centre notched another win when it was honoured with a Silver award at the tourism industry’s “night of nights”.

Darwin Convention Centre sparkled in the Business Tourism category of the 28th Australian Tourism Awards gala, the annual celebration of the highest achievements of Australian tourism businesses which was held in Hobart 15th February. Over 850 industry leaders and operators attended the event.

Finalists are drawn from the State and Territory Tourism Awards winners – including the Brolga Northern Territory Tourism Awards – across 27 categories including tour and transport operators, accommodation, attractions, business tourism, events and new tourism development.

Entrants first had to win their respective state category. The Centre has come away with the Brolga Awards three years in a row.

“It is an honour to receive national recognition with a silver award as a tourism business that strives for excellence in every area of our operation,” says Malu Barrios, General Manager of the Darwin Convention Centre.

It was an amazing night for Northern Territory tourism operators, having won no less than nine awards – five gold awards, one silver and three bronze.

Outrigger Opens Luxury Property on Phi Phi Island Thailand

PHUKET, November 1, 2012 – The Outrigger Phi Phi Island Resort and Spa officially opens this weekend in southern Thailand. From November 3, the stunning 156-key 70-acre property, formerly known as the Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort and Spa, will be run by Outrigger Hotels and Resorts, the 65-year old Hawaii based company that continues to expand in Asia-Pacific from its regional headquarters in Phuket, Thailand.

Outrigger took over the sales and marketing of the property in October last year. Since then, extensive improvements have been made, including the addition of 44 new Deluxe Garden Bungalows. The gym has been improved. Food and beverage venues have been enhanced.
“We have started to implement Outrigger international standards across facilities, food and beverage and human resource services,” said Darren Edmonstone, Managing Director Asia-Pacific for Outrigger. “It’s a completely new era for one of the most beautiful beach resorts in Thailand,” he said.

The new 53 sqm Deluxe Garden Bungalows are the highlight of the changes. They are located in clusters giving the atmosphere of a traditional Thai village. Inside, the interiors are contemporary with Thai touches. Each one features a walk-in wardrobe, a flat screen television, and iPod/iPhone docking station.

“The new Deluxe Garden Bungalows now give our guests superlative comfort and amenities on a par with the idyllic standards set by Mother Nature all around,” said the property’s General Manager, Marc Landgraf, who was appointed in July.

A new executive chef with extensive luxury hotel experience has also been hired to implement a completely refreshed food and beverage offering. He will bring acclaimed culinary expertise in Thai, French, Italian and Japanese cuisine to Outrigger. His new creations will be available in the resort very soon.

The property already wins consistent accolades on TripAdvisor. The unique location in a quiet peninsula of northeast Phi Phi allows guests to step from the resort right on to an 800-metre white sand beach with translucent sea water. Outrigger offers guests snorkeling, scuba diving, private boat excursions, fishing and a full spa facility.
