Record Breaking Tokyo – IAPCO Celebrates highest ever Annual Meeting Attendance

IAPCO holds its Annual Meeting, bringing together its members from around the globe. This year is particularly special as it marks the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Association and the start of twelve months of celebratory activities. This was kicked off in style, with over 100 members and destination partners from over 32 countries attending, this meeting has broken attendance records to make it the largest IAPCO has ever held!

‘The numbers are in, social media was buzzing and the emails keep coming – the IAPCO Annual Meeting in Tokyo was an all around success. This was in large due to the outstanding organization by our Japanese friends, who took care of every detail and truly captured the “IAPCO spirit” says Mathias Posch, President of IAPCO.Based on participant feedback the meeting scored second highest of all time, narrowly missing the top spot by a mere fraction of a percent.

The successful collaboration between IAPCO and the host, Congress Corporation, in co-operation with other IAPCO members, JCS and JTB, all of whom worked hard to bring the vision for the meeting to life. JNTO and various cities throughout Japan provided valuable support and offered popular fam. trips to various cities, pre and post conference.

The Tokyo Annual Meeting programme was packed full of inspirational keynotes, engaging teamwork exercises, an excellent panel discussion entitled ‘Lost in Translation’ focusing on the cultural nuances that will make all the difference to international clients/PCOs when bringing meetings to Japan alongside a spectacular cultural social programme which allowed for plenty of networking.

IAPCO brand awareness and membership growth in Asia was a key focus of the strategic plan. Holding the Annual Meeting in Tokyo and the excellent relationships this has created has been a big contributing factor to meeting these goals. Jan Tonkin, Immediate Past President of IAPCO said ‘Looking back on my two years as President I am particularly proud of the increased reach IAPCO has achieved in Asia Pacific. It is an incredibly diverse region where the meetings industry continues to grow in strength rapidly. We have welcomed new members from the region, raised our profile at the key industry trade shows and have held educational seminars in Kuala Lumpur, Suzhou and Taipei with more taking place in both Suzhou and Taipei in April.’

African Agenda win the IAPCO Driving Excellence Innovation Award

May 31, 2017

African Agenda win the IAPCO Driving Excellence Innovation Award

Elizabeth Winter of African Agenda was the celebrated winner of the IAPCO Driving Excellence Innovation Award 2016, as announced at the impressive IMEX Gala Evening in Frankfurt. Corne Koch of Wesgro Convention Bureau was delighted to accept the award on Elizabeth’s behalf, presented by Jan Tonkin, IAPCO President.

Elizabeth’s award winning innovation was a “standing discussion“, a session, which took participants out of their comfort zones and brought them together to share ideas in a lively, structured discussion. Experiences and knowledge were shared and new ideas sparked, as all corners of the session topic were explored. The bonus connection of improved cognition and physical movement to strengthen learning, improve memory retrieval, and enhance motivation and morale was not missed by the participants who scored the sessions highly when surveyed post conference.

Elizabeth stated ‘Being innovative does not necessarily imply being an inventor, we suggest it implies assessing a situation, a need, an audience and crafting a concept in order to shape a solution. This is an example of that.’

The IAPCO Innovation Award, which is supported by IMEX, is in its third year and attracted excellent quality and varied submissions. Three finalists each created a video describing their innovation, presented to the audience of the IAPCO Annual Meeting in Dubai for the final vote. The results were very close and both runners-up deserve recognition for their innovative concepts: Susan Kilcoyn, Conference Partners International for Connect16; and Ziv Izackov, Kenes Group, for a technological innovation for ESPID 2016.

Hamburg Convention Bureau with a brand new design concept at IMEX Frankfurt

May 11, 2017

A fresh breeze from the north: Hamburg Convention Bureau with a brand new design concept at IMEX Frankfurt

Hamburg, 11 May 2017The Hamburg Metropolitan Region will be creating a fresh breeze at this year’s IMEX in Frankfurt, one of the conference and convention industry’s major trade fairs. At IMEX, the Hamburg Convention Bureau (HCB) will be presenting the Hamburg Metropolitan Region with a brand new appearance and an innovative stand design. Hamburg’s broad portfolio will be showcased by the HCB’s 16 stand partners who reflect Hamburg’s strong performance as a prime destination for meetings and events.

The new stand design draws on the core concept of the wave. On a floor space of 104 m², the friendly, inviting and maritime-looking Hamburg stand exudes Northern German flair and provides the sub-exhibitors from the Hamburg Metropolitan Region as well as trade fair visitors with an authentic home.

Airy and open, the new stand design creates the ideal setting for communicating and networking. Large-scale pictures, balustrades planted with dune grass and the traditional “Heisse Ecke” booth with its original Hamburg-style Currywurst further add to the communicative atmosphere. What is more, the integration of 360° footage and virtual reality glasses allows visitors to immerse themselves in the Hamburg way of life and gain insights into the city’s contrasting faces, creating a one-of-a-kind Hamburg experience. The CCH – Congress Center Hamburg will also be onsite with virtual reality glasses. Paying tribute to digitilisation, sustainability and customer service, printed material will not be provided at the Hamburg stand. Instead, visitors will be able to select the desired information from the Hamburg partners via a digital messaging kiosk and have it sent to their own e-mail address.

Michael Otremba, managing director of the Hamburg Convention Bureau, explains the Hamburg Metropolitan Region’s new stand design: “With our new design concept we have made a number of changes to ensure a coherent picture of Hamburg, while at the same time providing an excellent business environment. Together with our partners we would like to create an atmosphere for dialogue that makes visitors feel just as comfortable as if they were directly in Hamburg. As well as offering a broad range of meeting facilities, Hamburg’s destination marketing is mainly aimed at highlighting the city’s strongest assets: its overall attractiveness, its cultural diversity, and, above all, its contrasting faces.

To raise Hamburg’s profile among international congress organisers, the Hamburg Convention Bureau has extended its corporate partnership agreement with the International Association of Professional Congress Organizers (IAPCO) by a further 18 months. With this partnership, the HCB aims to promote Hamburg as a congress destination among IAPCO members, i.e. 117 professional conference organisers – and to present Hamburg as a quality location for conventions and events. About 50 percent of IAPCO members operate globally, which will sustainably advance Hamburg’s popularity as an international destination and contribute to potential value creation for Hamburg as a location.

Going for Gold – IAPCO celebrates 50th anniversary AM&GA in Basel
IAPCO is excited to announce that their Golden Anniversary AM&GA will be organised by its member Congrex Switzerland at the Congress Center Basel, from 14-17 February 2019.

Basel has won the bid to host the 50th IAPCO Annual Meeting and General Assembly with the announcement being made during the recent Annual Meeting in Dubai. The Swiss bid was organised by IAPCO members Congrex Switzerland & MCI Group with support from the Government of the Canton Basel-Stadt, the Swiss Convention & Incentive Bureau, the Basel Tourism & Convention Bureau, the Congress Center Basel and last but not least the Municipality of Montreux and Montreux Riviera for the Council Meeting prior to the Annual Meeting.

It is not every day that an association celebrates its Golden Anniversary, so the event is sure to be popular amongst the members. There will be many surprises in store, as well as a high quality education programme and plenty of networking opportunities with a Swiss flavour!

IAPCO has a strong legacy in Switzerland having organised the “Wolfsberg” IAPCO Annual Seminars in this destination for over 40 years. This is only the second time the Annual Meeting will take place in Switzerland, the first being in 1988 in Zurich.

“The Government of the Canton Basel-Stadt is delighted that IAPCO has decided to hold its 50th Annual Meeting and General Assembly in 2019 in Basel and congratulates all supporting parties involved in the successful bid” says Councillor Christoph Brutschin.

Alain Pittet, Managing Director of Congrex Switzerland, adds: “I am proud that we have been elected host of the IAPCO Annual Meeting in 2019. Together with our partners and supporters we will showcase Basel and Switzerland as an ideal event destination to the world’s leading Professional Conference Organisers.”

APCO AM&GA attendance at an all time high in Dubai

March 21, 2017

Professional Congress Organisers from across the globe came together in Dubai for the 2017 IAPCO Annual Meeting and General Assembly.

Hosted by Dubai-based IAPCO member company Meeting Minds Experts, and supported by Dubai Business Events (DBE), this landmark event celebrated the highest recorded attendance for an IAPCO Annual Meeting taking place outside of Europe, with 115 delegates from over 30 countries participating. The meeting took place from February 16-19, at Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights.

Dubai is the first city in the GCC region to host the IAPCO meeting and General Assembly, now in its 48th year. The successful event was themed around ‘Leading the Future, Creating Opportunities’, and over the course of three days, industry leading lights took to the stage to discuss both the opportunities and the challenges facing the modern conference and convention industry.

Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), said: “We are extremely honoured for the opportunity to host an event of such a calibre and welcome members of IAPCO to the city we fondly call home. This further strengthens Dubai’s profile as a premier international business event destination and highlights the emirate’s diversified offering-comprising global connectivity, state-of-the-art facilities, first-class infrastructure, and great hospitality-to key stakeholders who shape the business events industry.  As our reputation of being a dynamic host city for business events grows, we anticipate further growth in the number of visitors to the emirate in line with Dubai’s Tourism Vision for 2020 and the UAE Vision 2021.”

The IAPCO 2017 programme was packed with inspiring and informative keynotes, lively debate sessions, a destination teamwork challenge and the Driving Excellence Awards Ceremony celebrating the achievements of IAPCO members.  Of course, there were plenty of opportunities for networking, as well as treating guests to Arabia’s famous hospitality with a desert Bedouin experience and other social occasions with a local flavour.

Commenting on the meeting, Jan Tonkin, said: “This year’s annual meeting and general assembly offered a unique platform to discuss the all-important quality standards we strive to achieve globally, and to network with other like-minded partners in an environment that is more than collegial. Attendees were made privy to best practice in addition to witnessing outstanding presentations from experts who stimulated each to think differently.

First EDGE Seminar resounding success

September 9, 2015

First EDGE Seminar resounding success

It was with some trepidation that I agreed to host the first EDGE Seminar” commented Jan Tonkin, MD of The Conference Company, “as New Zealand is often perceived to be a faraway destination, possibly even on the edge of the world. With a new educational offering, I felt this might be a challenge. I was delighted therefore to well exceed our target numbers, with participants travelling from Zimbabwe and Australia to take part in this innovative environment. The support I received from Tourism New Zealand Business Events and the Auckland Convention Bureau was a major contributing factor to the success of this seminar“.

Michel Neijmann, Figur, Istanbul; Mathias Posch, ICS, Vancouver and Jan Tonkin comprised the international faculty, sharing their extensive experience. Listening to presentations, however, formed only a small part of the programme: interactive and conversational discussion, sharing experiences, deep dive sessions on topics such as Bidding and Serving the Clients of the Future played a key part allowing participants to engage with the themes and bring away insights and strategies that have an immediate impact on the way they work in today’s fast pace environment. Over 40 participants took part, representing an even split between PCOs, Convention Bureaux and venues, engaging in a programme that was intensely focused on the future of the meetings industry and the rapidly changing realities of life as a PCO. Participants took an in-depth look at a range of issues preoccupying the meetings world right now including delegate engagement and experiences, hybrid meetings and managing project finances.

While time to showcase Auckland was limited, the group dined on two occasions at offsite venues and enjoyed great views of the city’s harbour on one side and a park on the other from the daylit meeting room on the top floor of the Pullman Hotel.

EDGE lived up to its name” commented Jan, “this truly was dynamic global education, and I am proud that New Zealand lived up to its reputation as a first-class destination and that IAPCO is continuing its remit of providing expert education for meetings industry professionals”.

September 8, 2015

Association Focus & Evening offer superb education and networking opportunities at IMEX America 2015

Increasing revenues, designing better meetings and using mobile technologies in meetings are among the engaging subjects to be explored at Association Focus, a key part of IMEX America’s Smart Monday education program on 12 October 2015 in Las Vegas.

This special educational event, designed by IMEX together with ASAE and ICCA, is packed with fascinating discussions and insightful presentations led by an inspiring group of engaging speakers including industry professionals and independent specialists.

Taking place at the Venetian®| The Palazzo® Congress Center, the free event is exclusively for association executives. More than 180 association professionals from over 15 countries are expected to attend.

The day will be packed with motivating sessions where delegates can boost their knowledge and gather valuable insights and advice from peers and experts that will be helpful both in running associations as well as their events. The event also offers superb opportunities for association executives to network with peers and experts from across the globe.

After a networking lunch, delegates will first have a choice of three tracks. The ICCA session is ‘What’s Your Story?’ Led by Betsy Bair of Penton Media, Lisa Astorga, CMP of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis and Martin Sirk, CEO of ICCA, it starts from the premise that every association meeting is a chance to tell a great story – so how can associations make the most of these stories and opportunities?

At the same time, Willis Turner, CEO of Sales & Marketing Executives International Inc and Shelly Alcorn, Principal of Alcorn Associates will explore the potential role and opportunities to use gaming to increase loyalty and engagement.

Dedicated Executive Track
The dedicated ASAE Executive Track will open with ‘The Journey to Great Governance’, presented by Susan Robertson, CAE, Executive Vice President, ASAE, highlighting best practice in how non-profit boards of directors can fulfil their roles in living up to public and stakeholder expectations. This will be followed by Amy Hissrich, VP Web Strategies & Communications at ASAE explaining how mobile technologies can be used to maximise results from meetings.

Meanwhile delegates can also choose to learn about increasing non-due revenues in international markets from Faris Abouhamad of the International Advertising Association and Steen Jakobsen of Dubai Business Events. Alternatively, they can hear from John Folks and Katie Callahan-Giobbi of Mindingyourbusiness on measuring the attendee experience – and how different approaches can help to design a better meeting.

A packed day of education will be followed by a superb social event – Association Evening – which will feature Cocktails and Canapés at the stunning ‘indoor-outdoor’ Foxtail Nightclub, SLS Las Vegas; a fantastic opportunity to network with peers and invited exhibitors in a relaxed environment.

Carina Bauer, CEO of the IMEX Group says: “Association Focus is a unique event in North America – bringing together association executives from around the US and the world to network and learn with each other in a private environment. We work hard with the market to ensure that the education sessions are highly relevant and delivered by first class educators. The Association Evening is a great culmination to the day and we are excited this year to be at a beautiful new poolside venue – it promises to be spectacular.”
