Hamburg to take planners behind the scenes at one of Europe’s largest convention centres – at IMEX in Frankfurt

Visitors to Hamburg Convention Bureau’s stand at IMEX in Frankfurt can step inside one of Europe’s largest convention centres and virtually explore the redeveloped venue’s 50 halls in advance of its official opening.

Specially developed VR headsets using new ‘unreal engine’ technology enable planners at the show to move through the Congress Center Hamburg (CCH) and interact with the space. The resulting visual experience is comparable to a real walk through the new CCH and by far exceeds static 360 degree views.

The new CCH will be the largest of its kind in Germany when it reopens in 2020 with a 12,000 sqm exhibition area and 12,000 seats in up to 50 halls. The redeveloped centre will be able to accommodate several concurrent events and the entrance hall, rising as tall as the main building, provides an additional multi-purpose space.

Joining the CCH team at Hamburg Convention Bureau’s stand at IMEX are a vast range of hotels and venues. This includes three 5* hotels – the largest privately owned 5* conference hotel in Germany, the Grand Elysee; the Hotel Atlantic Kempinski and the recently-opened The Fontenay, which offers breath-taking views over the Alster Lake from its 131 rooms and suites.

Other hotels on the stand include the greenest hotel in Germany – the Scandic; hip design hotel Gastwerk and Jufa Hotel Hamburg HafenCity – a new four-star, 200 room hotel located in the heart of Europe’s largest inner-city development project. It has five workshop and seminar rooms, hosting up to 500 participants.

TUI Cruises, one of the leading catering and event suppliers Nord Event and UNESCO World Heritage Site Lübeck, ensure there is a wide range of venues, destinations and suppliers from across the Germany’s celebrated maritime region for planners to meet.

Florian Gerdes, Marketing Manager Conventions at Hamburg Convention Bureau, explains:
We’re looking forward to showing planners a new way to experience the city’s show stopping venues. The use of innovative technology at our stand – combined with traditional Hamburg hospitality with curry sausage and tea cocktails – brings to life the city’s top credentials as a formidable location for meetings and events. Hamburg offers an ever-growing choice of venue and accommodation options – with 19 hotels scheduled to open this year alone.”

Hamburg Convention Bureau is at stand number G100 at IMEX in Frankfurt, taking place 15 – 17 May 2018.

IMEX Frankfurt 2018

March 9, 2018

May 18, 2017

Oman wins the bid to host the World Cancer Congress in 2020

Oman wins the bid to host the World Cancer Congress in 2020
Oman to welcome the 2020 World Cancer Congress, including up to 4,000 cancer control experts from more than 140 countries

Muscat, 11 May 2017: The Oman Cancer Association announces that Muscat has been selected to host the World Cancer Congress (WCC) in 2020. The World Cancer Congress is a major international cancer control forum which convenes up to 4,000 renowned cancer and health professionals to network and share the latest successful interventions in cancer implementation science including prevention, diagnosis and care, as well as supportive and palliative care. Held every two years, the Congress is hosted by a local member of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), and for the first time since the event’s inception in 1933, it will take place in the Arabian Gulf.

The Oman Cancer Association, the National Oncology Centre at the Royal Hospital Muscat, both members of UICC, as well as the Oman Convention Bureau and the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) joined forces to submit a complete and high quality application which resulted in them winning over strong international competition.

Professor Sanchia Aranda, President of UICC, said: “After an extensive evaluation and review of the submitted bids, we are pleased to announce that the city of Muscat, Oman, has been selected to host the 2020 World Cancer Congress and the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit. We appreciate that such bids involve considerable work, and we thank our members and the other applicants for their enthusiasm and commitment to organising such important global cancer control events in the region, in collaboration with UICC.”

The bid was submitted by Dr. Wahid Al Kharusi, FRCS, President of Oman Cancer Association, Dr. Basem Al Bahrani, Director and Dr. Zahid Al Mandhari, FRCPC, Deputy Director, National Oncology Centre, with the support of HE Dr Ahmed Mohammed Obaid Al Saidi, Minister of Health of the Sultanate of Oman.

“The World Cancer Congress aims to strengthen the action and impact of the cancer and the wider health community on national, regional and international levels through a multidisciplinary educational programme and high-calibre attendees,” said Dr. Wahid Al Kharusi.

“Hence the theme of our bid: ‘Shed Some Light and Make a Difference’. Moreover, the World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that incidence of cancer in the Middle East will double by 2030, so felt it was crucial to keep raising awareness of the disease, especially across the Gulf Cooperation Council countries (GCC) and Africa. Welcoming the WCC in Oman will certainly foster our work to educate the local population, and help the global cancer community to further make a difference,” added Dr. Zahid Al Mandhari.

Khalid Al Zadjali, Director of Oman Convention Bureau, commented, “This is a great success story for Oman and the new Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre as it demonstrates that our country is a strong contender when it comes to securing international events. The WCC is a key global forum for knowledge exchange around cancer and hosting it in Muscat will benefit not only Oman but the entire region. Oman has so much to offer, ranging from a brand new world class convention & exhibition centre to attractive hotels, easy access to places of interest and a brand new airport. In addition, the government is very supportive of the initiative, and traditionally Omanis are very hospitable.”

Trevor McCartney, General Manager of OCEC, stated, “We are very excited to host such a renowned international event at the Oman Conference Convention & Exhibition Centre, winning against other international cities and venues. We now join the ranks of well-established Business Events destinations such as Kuala Lumpur and Paris in the list of host cities for the WCC.”

The Oman Convention Bureau and the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre will attend IMEX in Frankfurt, Germany from 16 to 18 May.

Hamburg Convention Bureau with a brand new design concept at IMEX Frankfurt

May 11, 2017

A fresh breeze from the north: Hamburg Convention Bureau with a brand new design concept at IMEX Frankfurt

Hamburg, 11 May 2017The Hamburg Metropolitan Region will be creating a fresh breeze at this year’s IMEX in Frankfurt, one of the conference and convention industry’s major trade fairs. At IMEX, the Hamburg Convention Bureau (HCB) will be presenting the Hamburg Metropolitan Region with a brand new appearance and an innovative stand design. Hamburg’s broad portfolio will be showcased by the HCB’s 16 stand partners who reflect Hamburg’s strong performance as a prime destination for meetings and events.

The new stand design draws on the core concept of the wave. On a floor space of 104 m², the friendly, inviting and maritime-looking Hamburg stand exudes Northern German flair and provides the sub-exhibitors from the Hamburg Metropolitan Region as well as trade fair visitors with an authentic home.

Airy and open, the new stand design creates the ideal setting for communicating and networking. Large-scale pictures, balustrades planted with dune grass and the traditional “Heisse Ecke” booth with its original Hamburg-style Currywurst further add to the communicative atmosphere. What is more, the integration of 360° footage and virtual reality glasses allows visitors to immerse themselves in the Hamburg way of life and gain insights into the city’s contrasting faces, creating a one-of-a-kind Hamburg experience. The CCH – Congress Center Hamburg will also be onsite with virtual reality glasses. Paying tribute to digitilisation, sustainability and customer service, printed material will not be provided at the Hamburg stand. Instead, visitors will be able to select the desired information from the Hamburg partners via a digital messaging kiosk and have it sent to their own e-mail address.

Michael Otremba, managing director of the Hamburg Convention Bureau, explains the Hamburg Metropolitan Region’s new stand design: “With our new design concept we have made a number of changes to ensure a coherent picture of Hamburg, while at the same time providing an excellent business environment. Together with our partners we would like to create an atmosphere for dialogue that makes visitors feel just as comfortable as if they were directly in Hamburg. As well as offering a broad range of meeting facilities, Hamburg’s destination marketing is mainly aimed at highlighting the city’s strongest assets: its overall attractiveness, its cultural diversity, and, above all, its contrasting faces.

To raise Hamburg’s profile among international congress organisers, the Hamburg Convention Bureau has extended its corporate partnership agreement with the International Association of Professional Congress Organizers (IAPCO) by a further 18 months. With this partnership, the HCB aims to promote Hamburg as a congress destination among IAPCO members, i.e. 117 professional conference organisers – and to present Hamburg as a quality location for conventions and events. About 50 percent of IAPCO members operate globally, which will sustainably advance Hamburg’s popularity as an international destination and contribute to potential value creation for Hamburg as a location.

Exceptional education value will match full-force of business at IMEX in Frankfurt 2017

May 5, 2017

Exceptional education value will match full-force of business at IMEX in Frankfurt 2017

We really value being able to offer inspiration, bringing people together to share ideas, discover new tools and learn new skills. We’re set to deliver this in abundance with our packed programme of education sessions at IMEX this year. Business is set to dominate – as always – but education is a vital force that gives each year’s show a unique personality and edge,” explains Carina Bauer, CEO of the IMEX Group.

With over 200 education sessions taking place throughout the show, including a new dedicated day in the form of EduMonday, IMEX in Frankfurt taking place 16 – 18 May offers its biggest ever education programme. In terms of added value, over 70 per cent of all professional development education at IMEX is certified.

Introducing a brand new education experience – EduMonday
Planners can take part in high quality education the day before IMEX in Frankfurt begins with EduMonday, a brand new education experience taking place on Monday 15 May. With registration free of charge and open to all, this interactive day will provide insights into event design, future trends and hot new technologies, using informal, contemporary learning styles.

IMEX’s EduMonday will feature experts from the new Zeus Eventtech Academy, the German Convention Bureau (GCB), Meetology® Masterclasses and Play with a Purpose. IMEX is also offering the Event Design Certificate Programme Level 1 of Mastery as part of a three-year agreement with the Event Design Collective. This allows 30 English and 30 German-speaking event professionals to take their career to the next level by taking the certification free of charge on the day.

Exploring Purposeful Meetings with first ever keynote
The show’s first ever English language education keynote explores this year’s IMEX Talking Point, Purposeful Meetings. Janet Sperstad from Madison Area Technical College shares the preliminary results of a major piece of industry research into Purposeful meetings research: creating deeper meaning.

Janet Sperstad explains: “Purposeful meetings define planning that produces very specific outcomes and attendee behaviours, in addition to the normal meeting strategy and learning objectives. Delivering more purposeful meetings will help planners create experiences that drive deeper meaning and value for attendees and, of course, clients.” An interview with Janet Sperstad about her career to date and her profound interest in ‘Purposeful Meetings’ can be found here.

Carina adds: “This is the first substantial piece of industry research we’ve undertaken since our 10th Anniversary in 2012, and signifies our confidence in the Purposeful Meetings concept – a concept that’s making waves in the industry and one that we want to explore further with planners at IMEX. The full white paper, with the support of PSAV, will be available at IMEX America in October”.

Free show floor education
A wider programme of free education runs across the three days of the show. Participants can choose from 10 tracks including technology, business skills, diversity and marketing in order to create their own bespoke schedule. MPI is delivering a session on Exploring unique learning formats, IAEE explores The next 40 years of trade shows and Play With A Purpose addresses how to engage younger planners in Interaction for millennials. There are over 200 seminars, including workshops, campfires and bite-sized show-floor education- all designed to help planners at all levels keep a finger on the pulse of the industry.

This includes a session on the results of an exclusive survey into the roles and workplace experiences of women in the event industry run by trade magazines tw tagungswirtschaft and m+a report together with IMEX. Kerstin Wuensch from tw and other industry leaders will explore female leadership, career building and equality in women in the event industry – equal status or lagging behind?

April 28, 2017

Saudi Arabia to launch into MICE sector worldwide by exhibiting at IMEX in Frankfurt
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is to launch its first international campaign to market the country as a destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions by exhibiting at IMEX in Frankfurt 2017 from 16 to 18 May.

Supported by a public relations campaign devised and implemented by London-based Clareville Communications, this marketing activity by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage in association with the Saudi Exhibition and Convention Bureau will highlight the extensive range of more than 600 first class hotels, convention and exhibition facilities available in the leading cities across the country.
The marketing initiative is a practical step in line with Vision 2030, announced in April 2016, setting out economic and social policies designed to move the Kingdom’s economy away from its dependence on oil. Hosting business events is one of the focal points of the reforms, along with leisure and religious tourism, all means to generate both revenue and employment.
Under the National Transformation Plan, the centrepiece of Vision 2030, the Saudi Commission for Tourism & National Heritage (SCTH) is investing almost SAR 26 billion (US $7 billion) on initiatives around the country.
Established nearly four years ago, the Saudi Exhibition and Convention Bureau was created with a mandate to develop the meetings industry.
Tariq A. Al-Essa, Executive Director of the Saudi Exhibition and Convention Bureau explains: “As the worldwide exhibition for incentive travel, meetings and events, IMEX in Frankfurt is the perfect place for us to meet thousands of influential event and meetings buyers face-to-face and to show them the opportunities in Saudi Arabia and many superb facilities that we could offer them.”

Successful trials lead IMEX in Frankfurt to fully-fledged roll out of Zenvoy networking service

March 21, 2017

Successful trials lead IMEX in Frankfurt to fully-fledged roll out of Zenvoy networking service
Continuing its drive to enable buyers and exhibitors to make the most of networking opportunities, IMEX in Frankfurt has partnered with networking specialists Zenvoy to make it easier for attendees to meet even more like-minded people at the show.

The introduction of this new service at IMEX in Frankfurt follows a pilot test a year ago and its successful introduction and roll-out at IMEX America in October 2016.

Carina Bauer, CEO of the IMEX Group said; “We’re always interested in partnerships and collaborations with innovators who can bring new concepts to market – everyone from education designers to event tech developers. When there’s a clear benefit to an important audience, in this case meetings and events planners, then we like to conduct a small, manageable trial and, if the results are sound and the feedback’s good, then we tend to move quickly to a formal roll-out and launch. Zenvoy’s a great example of that process.

10,000 introductions to date
“Zenvoy creates networking opportunities not only at the show but long afterwards. After facilitating 3,000 plus introductions before and during IMEX America, over 10,000 introductions have now been made for IMEX America buyers and we have an IMEX America community with more than 1,300 active users.

”Helping our clients make powerful connections with the right people is now built into our mission. New partners with fresh new ideas, such as Zenvoy, help us keep that target in plain sight.”

Meaningful connections
Devan Chauhan, Assistant Manager – MICE & Leisure, at Globe Forex & Travels Ltd was a Hosted Buyer at IMEX America 2016. He says, “In this era of digitization, Zenvoy is an awesome platform for digital contact exchange and networking, allowing users like me to contact professionals of the same field. I am really happy with it and would like to continue to take its services in future.”

Zenvoy achieves results for IMEX by inviting pre-registered hosted buyers and visitor buyers to opt-in and complete a confidential profile. It then uses intelligent data profiling software to analyse and match each person with others with similar business profiles including job title, nature of business and number of years in the industry. Like-minded individuals are then invited to connect online or arrange to meet face-to-face at the show during lunch breaks or at the end of the day.

Leo Gestetner, Co-Founder and CEO of Zenvoy commented; “The service and the data are entirely private, meaning attendees are assured of complete discretion and the introductions are specific to IMEX in Frankfurt. There is no downloading, swiping, searching, hunting or spamming. Zenvoy turns IMEX from a 4-day event to months of networking!”
