Mayor gives green light for Lumiere to return to London in 2018

• Lumiere London will take place from 18-21 January 2018

• More than 40 installations will light up London’s streets, buildings and public spaces, bringing millions of visitors to the city

• Mayor encourages people from London, across the UK and the world to discover the city in a new light

• Businesses and brands invited to take advantage of sponsorship opportunities to help make London shine

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has revealed the dates for Lumiere London 2018 – the capital’s largest night-time festival. More than 40 UK and international artists will transform the city and offer new perspectives on the capital’s iconic architecture, streets and landmarks.

Lumiere London 2018 will take place over four nights between 18 and 21 January 2018. Building on the phenomenal success of Lumiere London 2016, festival destinations will include King’s Cross, London’s West End (including Carnaby, Regent Street, Oxford Circus, Leicester Square, Mayfair, Piccadilly, St James’s, Fitzrovia and Westminster). Works will be exhibited both north and south of the River Thames, with Covent Garden, Victoria, South Bank and Waterloo added as new destinations for 2018.

Communities from across the capital will be able to take part in the festival. Residents of outer London boroughs will be invited to take part through schools and participation projects and volunteering schemes, which will ensure all Londoners can benefit from this extraordinary cultural event.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “Lumiere London 2018 will be bigger, brighter and bolder than ever before – with even more areas of our city involved and even more people expected to visit this incredible festival.

“I am particularly pleased that this year we are organising community projects in outer London boroughs to ensure that as many Londoners as possible can get involved with this world-class event.

“Lumiere London 2018 shows that London is open to people from across the world and open to creativity and ideas, and open for business. I look forward to welcoming millions of visitors to the capital and building on the success of 2016’s showpiece.

“There’s no better way to banish the January blues – so get ready to take to the streets and marvel at a dazzling array of incredible artwork and installations.”

1.3 million visitors enjoyed Lumiere London in 2016, at a time when the city is usually quiet, following the Christmas break. The ground-breaking event featured 30 installations by UK and international artists in landmark locations. Visitors to the event spent £22m and the festival was the winner of Best Debut and Best Outdoor Event of the Year at the Event Awards.

Lumiere London 2018 is commissioned by the Mayor of London and programmed and produced by Artichoke, with major support from King’s Cross and the West End Partnership. Additional support will be provided by a host of partners and funders including The Fitzrovia Partnership, South Bank and Waterloo BIDs and London & Partners.

Helen Marriage, Artichoke CEO and Lumiere London Artistic Director, said: “In January 2016, more than a million people came out on some of the coldest nights of the year to enjoy this great world city as it had never been seen before.

“I’m thrilled that the Mayor has commissioned Artichoke to programme and produce the second edition of Lumiere London. The festival is the biggest night-time event in London and will transform the capital into a giant art exhibition without walls. As a global showcase for the capital, it is an excellent sponsorship opportunity that every business and brand should consider.

“Lumiere London offers a fantastic platform for UK and international artists to reach the widest possible audiences and there are no financial barriers to attendance. Everyone is invited.”

Mayor launches #MyLondonDish campaign, backed by top chefs, to celebrate London’s diverse food
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has launched a new social media campaign called #MyLondonDish to celebrate food in London, as part of his #LondonIsOpen movement.

Top chefs and food experts across the capital have pledged their support including Jamie Oliver, Jasmine and Melissa Hemsley, ‘Clerkenwell Boy’, and many more.

London has the highest concentration of restaurants in the UK including 65 Michelin-starred establishments, and offers more than 70 world cuisines. It is hoped that the campaign will encourage tourists to ignore outdated misconceptions about British food and instead explore the incredible variety of foods available in the capital.

The campaign begins in the same week as the Mayor of London made his first post from his new Instagram account, @MayorofLDN. In it he shared his favourite London dish, traditional fish and chips, saying: “London is an incredible place to eat with some of the best chefs, food markets, restaurants and cafes in the world. And of course, we do the best fish and chips. They’re #MyLondonDish (bit of a cliché, but the truth). What’s yours? Take a photo, video or live of your favourite food or your favourite place to eat and make sure to tag me and use #MyLondonDish. Show the world that #LondonIsOpen for the world’s best food!”

Social media users are being encouraged to share their chosen #MyLondonDish on Instagram or other social media platform. This could be a meal at their favourite London restaurant, or even something they’ve created using London-sourced ingredients. Those who join in the conversation will see their picture featured in a crowd-sourced gallery on a bespoke new segment of VisitLondon.com. Head to  http://www.visitlondon.com/mydish for more information.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “We want to unite Londoners and tourists alike through #MyLondonDish, to show that London is open to some of the finest cuisine in the world. Here in London we have thousands of incredible restaurants to eat and drink at, and a huge variety of interesting and exotic ingredients available at markets, shops and stalls throughout the capital. From traditional fish and chips to the best new fusion recipes, I urge Londoners to share their favourite dish and show the world that London is Open for food.”

Jamie Oliver said: “I’m loving the Mayor of London’s #MyLondonDish campaign to show the world that London is Open for Food. It’s a bit naughty to put one of my own restaurants in but Fifteen is a massively unique restaurant having trained so many people over the years. No credit to me, all to our head chef Robbin Holmgren and his ridiculously yummy short ribs. There is so much diversity in London when it comes to food so I’d encourage everyone to get out there and try something new.

Andrew Cooke, Acting Chief Executive London & Partners, which runs VisitLondon.com, said: “My London Dish is a great way for international visitors to share their culinary experiences and help make sure everyone knows that London offers some of the best food in the world. With vibrant food markets and over 8,000 restaurants, offering 70 world cuisines, the city has a dish for everyone.”

Award winning Instagrammer, Clerkenwell Boy said: ‘London has an amazing dining scene and each week is a new adventure, from pubs to pop-ups and markets to Michelin-starred restaurants London has something to offer everyone. I like to mix it up with the places I visit across the city, but for me the bacon and egg naan at Dishoom is #MyLondonDish as it’s such a brilliant twist on the classic British bacon butty. I’m excited to be a part of The Mayor of London’s #LondonIsOpen campaign and to celebrate the amazing food we have here in London.’

Mayor joins forces with Unicef for ‘Big Resolution’ as part of London’s New Year’s Eve celebrations

· Tickets for the New Year’s Eve fireworks go live this Friday 2 October at 12 noon
· New partnership with Unicef, the world’s leading children’s organisation, aims to bring people together in a moment for good that will help children in danger around the world
· Corporate sponsors invited to support award-winning event

Ahead of tickets being released to the public for the London New Year’s Eve fireworks display, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson today announced a new partnership with Unicef that will bring a new dimension to the acclaimed event.

100,000 revellers are expected to gather in the viewing areas for the hugely popular pyrotechnic and lighting display, which is focused around the Coca Cola London Eye. Tickets are being released to the public this Friday 2 October at midday.

Through the partnership with Unicef, ticketholders are being invited to come together for the first ever New Year’s ‘Big Resolution’. In addition to the exclusive programme music, countdown to midnight and the spectacular display itself, The Big Resolution will be a unifying moment aimed at raising awareness and bringing lasting change to the lives of vulnerable children around the world.

During this season of goodwill and as people make resolutions and look ahead to a happy New Year, Unicef is hoping to raise vital funds to help children caught in wars and disasters around the world, like the one in Syria.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: ‘Our stunning fireworks display is seen by millions of people across the globe, celebrating the successes of the last year and looking ahead with optimism and positivity to the new one. I am thrilled that we are linking up with a global organisation like Unicef to mark the start of 2016 by bringing people together for a shared moment of goodwill to raise awareness and benefit children around the world.

Unicef UK’s Deputy Executive Director, Catherine Cottrell, said: ‘Unicef is delighted to join with The Mayor of London New Year’s Eve fireworks. Together, we hope to unite people across the UK in The Big Resolution to help change the lives of vulnerable children around the world. We are living in unprecedented times. There are now more than 30 million children displaced from their homes, more than at any time since World War Two. Children need our help now more than ever. This promises to be a very special and memorable New Year’s Eve celebration.

More details about plans for the London New Year’s Eve fireworks, including Unicef’s involvement will be announced in due course.

Corporate sponsorship opportunities are available to businesses wanting to support the award-winning event, which is seen by 100,000 ticketed guests and attracted 16.1 million UK broadcast viewers, as well as an international audience in excess of one billion, in 2014. Corporate sponsorship offers businesses the ability to reach out to millions of people in the UK and abroad to promote this important campaign to help children around the world.

People wanting to guarantee a view and entry for this year’s celebrations will be able to book up to four tickets from midday on Friday 2 October by visiting www.london.gov.uk/nye. Each ticket is £10, with every penny being used to pay for the costs associated with the ticketing scheme.

Ticketing was brought in for the first time last year to help manage ever increasing crowds heading into central London for the display. The aim was to reduce numbers attempting to view the fireworks, but unable to do so, to help ensure its long term sustainability as a safe and enjoyable event. As well as being enjoyed by revellers in the viewing areas, the internationally acclaimed display is watched by millions on television and helps promote London around the world.

Anyone without a ticket will not be able to get into this year’s event, but they will still be able to take advantage of the hundreds of other celebrations taking place in pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants all over London, many close to home.

For updates and information about how to book tickets go to www.london.gov.uk/nye.
