Melbourne to host largest ever Chemical Congress in Australia

Melbourne has been chosen as the host city for the 17th Asian Chemical Congress (17ACC), and will be part of the Royal Australian Chemical Institutes (RACI) 2017 Centenary Congress, which will be the largest chemical congress ever held in Australia, in celebration of RACI’s centenary.

RACI has partnered with seven prestigious chemistry conferences, now including the 17ACC, to present what will be the most premium congress of partner conferences running concurrently, and covering the breadth of chemical science, to celebrate RACI’s 100 years of existence.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren said this will be one of the most significant congresses in the world for chemistry.

“Events of this calibre put Melbourne and Victoria on a world stage, and contribute significantly to our economy. Business events are the highest yielding sector of the Victorian visitor economy, delivering an economic contribution of $9.98 billion and 65,000 jobs annually,” Mr Eren said.

Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) secured the 17ACC, which will be the largest conference within the umbrella congress, and is anticipated to attract 1,200 delegates over 3 days and deliver $6.2 million in economic impact for the State.

“Securing this meeting is a major coup for Melbourne and Victoria and provides great recognition of our expert chemistry sector,” said MCB Chief Executive Officer, Karen Bolinger.

“Melbourne’s thriving chemistry community makes it the ideal city to advance the science and practice of chemistry.”

Melbourne’s winning bid was a testament to the successful collaboration between the Bureau, government and industry partners.

“Our ‘Team Melbourne’ approach to both bids and business events themselves means we can deliver events that exceed expectations and leave a lasting legacy on the local and global community.

“17ACC will boost public interest in chemistry and has the potential to unify chemists to drive new policy outcomes,” Ms Bolinger said.

Immediate Past President of the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies, Prof. Dr. Supawan Tantayanon, said she and her colleagues were looking forward to holding the 17ACC in Melbourne.

“With RACI being headquartered in Melbourne the chemistry network is extensive. We are confident that by choosing Melbourne, the 17ACC will attract the world’s top research chemists as well as provide opportunities for emerging young chemists from all over the world.

“MCB in collaboration with RACI and industry submitted a bid that answered our objectives, and demonstrated its track record in staging major conferences in this sector,” Prof. Dr. Supawan Tantayanon said.

Professor Mark Buntine, Centenary Congress Chair said the 17ACC will be one of the hallmark meetings of the congress.

“The RACI 2017 Centenary Congress will be the biggest chemical congress ever held in Australia and the 17ACC will play a vital role in inspiring the next generation of local and international chemists to progress and display their work,” Mr Buntine said.

The RACI 2017 Centenary Congress will attract 3,500 delegates over five days, and bring $22 million in economic contribution to Victoria. The Festival will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in July 2017.

AIME 2015 Gala Dinner location announced

Karen Bolinger, Chief Executive Officer, Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) has revealed today that Central Pier in Melbourne’s Docklands will set the scene for the inaugural 2015 Asia Pacific Incentives & Meetings Expo (AIME) Gala Dinner.

The showcase social event hosted by MCB will follow AIME on Wednesday, 25th February, rather than precede the show, which is all part of the new AIME experience.

“We are excited to announce the location as Central Pier as this community and events hub set on Melbourne’s waterfront reflects our distinct Melbourne style – meeting its industrial past with modern design and reinventing something new and surprising.”

“The setting, just minutes from the inner central business district and surrounded by stunning water views is perfect for the new style of event. Hosted Buyers, Media and Exhibitors will be immersed in a celebration that truly represents the creativity, colour and vibrancy of Melbourne.”

“Guests will be able to catchup with new business contacts and continue the conversations from the previous two days of the show in a more intimate and relaxed environment.”

Why Darmstadtium won top honors for its outstanding digital infrastructure?
INCON, the Global Partnership of leading Conference Organisers chose the darmstadtium as the 2014 winner of the INCON Digital Infrastructure Award. The darmstadtium overcame strong competition from the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Amsterdam RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre, which were recognised as 1st and 2nd runners up for the 2014 award. As nominations open for the 2015 award, INCON has developed a best practice case study to explain how the darmstadtium was selected from such an outstanding group of award entries from many major international convention centres around the world.
The INCON Award rests on a simple principle that meetings are better when a first class digital infrastructure is made available along with applications and tools that enhance the delegate productivity and experience. Roslyn McLeod, INCON Co Chair explains “INCON hopes that this case study will serve to inspire and inform convention centres and hotel conference venues as they strive to put cutting edge digital infrastructure services in place.”

The call to entry for the 2015 INCON Digital Infrastructure Award will open on 3rd of November. This year, INCON has opened the award to two categories:
Convention Centres
Convention Hotels
On 3 Nov, application forms can be downloaded from the INCON website: www.incon-pco.com/award. There is no entry fee. All it takes for a venue to be considered is a completed application. Once all the applications are received, the judges will review them and the winners will be announced in May 2015.

The case study is available to download here: www.incon-pco.com/award.

2014 AIME Welcome Reception location revealed

The wait is over – Karen Bolinger, Chief Executive Officer of the Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) has revealed that Birrarung Marr will be the location for the 2014 Asia-Pacific Incentives & Meetings Expo (AIME) Welcome Reception.

The AIME Welcome Reception will take place on Monday, 17 February, the night before the two-day tradeshow begins, with Birrarung Marr set to be transformed into a medley of all things quintessentially Melbourne.

“We are excited to announce that Birrarung Marr, located on the banks of the Yarra River and with sweeping views of the city skyline, will be where the AIME Welcome Reception pops up to welcome more than 2000 AIME delegates to Melbourne,” Ms Bolinger said.

“Named by Australia’s indigenous Wurundjeri people, Birrarung translates to “river of mists” while Marr refers to the side of the river.

“Positioned between Melbourne’s sporting precinct and the city centre, the inner-city park is only a five minute walk from Flinders Street Station and features captivating urban art, including Melbourne local Deborah Halpern’s two-headed Angel sculpture and the Federation Bells, which ring three times daily with different compositions.”

The site has previously hosted Ellen DeGeneres and her 5000 fans during their once-in-a-lifetime trip to Australia, and Melbourne’s ArtPlay, an event attended by Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark.

“AIME delegates will be immersed in all the vibrancy and quirkiness that makes Melbourne, Melbourne,” Ms Bolinger continued.

“They will get a taste of local life through dining from mobile food trucks, which have popped-up all over the city recently, and watching performances by some of our much-loved street entertainers.

“Many local businesses, which are MCB members, have joined forces to bring the AIME Welcome Reception to life including Peter Jones Special Events; Harry the Hirer; Epicure; Creative Entertainment Concepts and more.

“The AIME Welcome Reception is another example of how Melbourne can turn non-traditional event spaces into unique venues.

“I have no doubt that this event will further cement the great reputation of Melbourne’s premium business events services and suppliers.”
The dress code for the event is smart casual and flat shoes are recommended.

AIME is the largest business exhibition of its kind in Australia, which will take place on 18 and 19 February at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. AIME is set to attract over 3000 delegates responsible for organising, meetings, incentives and business travel and over 700 Exhibitors from 50 countries.

October 2012: The organisers of the Asia-Pacific Incentives & Meetings Expo (AIME), held annually in Melbourne, Australia, have signed a partnership with event industry bible, the A LIST Guide, to bring a new exhibition concept to next year’s show.

The comprehensive events Guide will launch the A LIST Open House at AIME 2013; a dedicated area where visitors can meet with new event suppliers and venues to gain inspiration for special events and functions.

Sally de Swart, Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) Director for AIME said, “Now in its 21st year, AIME continues to bring new initiatives and partnerships to the well-established show. Open House will be a valuable addition to the show floor and give visitors a face-to-face contact for special event services which are featured in the popular A LIST Guide.”

“Each year we listen to what our buyers, exhibitors and visitors want, actively taking their feedback on board and creating new and innovative initiatives and, based on this feedback, we have created A LIST Open House to provide our buyers with networking opportunities with niche suppliers.”

Co-owner and General Manager at A LIST Guide, James McGregor said, “A LIST Guide is a comprehensive online and printed directory to the best venues, suppliers and activities in Australia. We thought it would be great to bring the directory to life and create a face-to-face business area within AIME where event planners can meet the people behind the brands who make up the A LIST Guide; essentially bringing the brands into a live environment.”
